The Second Vatican Council, commonly known as Vatican II, was the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, who on succeeding Pope John XXIII took the name ofPaul VI

Bishop Albino Luciani, the future Pope John Paul I

Bishop Karol Wojtyła, who became Pope John Paul II

These are three of them that took part in the council’s opening session and later became pontiffs.

There is also a fourth who is Father Joseph Ratzinger, present as a theological consultant, who became Pope Benedict XVI, the current Pope.
