Three steps in Canonization

Canonization is the act by which the Catholic church declares a deceased person to be a saint, it does not make someone a saint: it is only a declaration that the person is a saint and was a saint even before canonization.

There are four steps in canonization, the fourth being the declaration as ‘Saint’. Three steps prior to that are:

• Servant of God
• Venerable
  
• Blessed
