Three women to win Grand Slam in the same calendar year

The “Grand Slam” is the winning of all four Major tournaments in a single year; however, it has also been used for many years now to refer to any of the major tournaments. Though technically incorrect, since a “Grand Slam” is a collective achievement, rather than a single event, this term is now used by the major tournaments themselves.

Three people who won GrandSlam in Women’s Singles (all four Major tournaments) in a single calendar year:

  • Margaret Court (1970)
    • 6 consecutive major titles, 1969 US Open through the 1971 Australian Open
Steffi Graf (Wimbledon 2009) 7.jpg
  • Steffi Graf (1988)
    • 5 consecutive major titles, 1988 Australian Open through the 1989 Australian Open
    • Graf also won the Olympic gold medal in 1988 (The “Golden” Grand Slam)
There were also three such occurrences in Men’s Singles: Don Budge in 1938 and Rod Laver  in 1962 and 1969.
